Nestled in the heart of Mumbai’s Four Bungalows, this sprawling 7,500-square-foot duplex is a celebration of art, heritage, and contemporary design. Conceived by the visionary designer Shabnam Gupta, the home reflects the creative personalities of its owners, an esteemed writer couple, while offering a sanctuary for both inspiration and indulgence. A masterclass in maximalist aesthetics, the space blends bold colors, intricate craftsmanship, and opulent textures, creating an evocative and layered narrative.
The journey into this home begins with a hand-carved wooden door, framed by intricate detailing that sets the tone for the artistic expression within. The entrance unfolds into a dramatic teal-hued foyer, punctuated by striking red artwork, curated curios, and statement lighting. Ornate archways and bold ceiling moldings guide the eye deeper into the home, where a breathtaking 14-foot-high living space emerges as the heart of the residence
Where Creativity Meets Comfort
Designed to cater to both intimate family moments and creative collaborations, the ground floor houses the living and dining areas, family bedrooms, and a conservatory with a bar and a vintage water feature. The upper level is a dedicated creative zone, featuring a study, a den, and an informal meeting space, a haven where ideas flow as freely as conversations.
The double-height living area exudes an air of regal charm, centered around a black helix staircase that connects the two floors. A statement piece, vintage temple panels set within antique mirrors commands attention, their gold and silver details shimmering against hand-painted metallic walls.
A Visual Feast
Every corner of the home is a sensory experience, where textures, patterns, and materials intertwine effortlessly. The black-and-white living room is punctuated with statement art and plush wainscoting, while the dining area breaks the monochrome palette with framed fuchsia pink Suzani textiles—a vibrant contrast against the vintage-style dining table. Custom velvet pendant lights echo the warmth of the space, while a modern black-and-white mandir lends a spiritual depth to the home.
The private spaces are infused with a rich cultural essence, featuring traditional motifs, vintage wardrobes, and handcrafted furnishings. The master bedroom showcases rattan details and Warli art, while a decadent dressing area adds an element of opulence. Jewel-toned chairs, Peacock Life lighting, and a glamorous Art Deco-inspired bathroom complete the retreat. In contrast, the child’s room is whimsical, with a canopy bed, a teddy bear chair, and an aquatic-themed ensuite bathroom, where hand-painted fish swim across the walls.
The glass conservatory on the upper level, repurposed from a terrace, serves as a tranquil escape, complete with an outdoor bar, vintage water feature, and eclectic art from Baro. The sunlit den and study provide an inspiring cocoon for creative brainstorming, reinforcing the home’s dual purpose as both a personal sanctuary and a professional retreat.
