Architect Milind Somani is the driving force behind Arche-Vista, an esteemed architectural and interior design firm based in Thane, Mumbai. With over 32 years of experience, Somani has shaped the landscape of diverse architectural projects, ranging from residential and commercial spaces to corporate offices, hospitals, hotels, and retail environments.
His expertise, combined with a profound understanding of Vastu principles, ensures that each project is not only aesthetically compelling but also functionally sound, reflecting the unique needs of his clients.
Somani’s path to architecture was unexpected. Coming from a humble background, he had little exposure to the field until a relative suggested he explore it. “Since childhood, I was passionate about art and sketching, often winning competitions. That passion naturally guided me toward architecture,” he recalls. He pursued his architectural education at MM College of Architecture, Pune, setting the foundation for what would become an illustrious career.
After completing his education, Somani sought hands-on training through an internship. In the pre-internet era, aspiring architects relied on newspaper classifieds to find opportunities. It was through one such advertisement that he came across Architect Farooq Faquih, a turning point in his career.
Somani credits Ar. Faquih as his greatest mentor, attributing much of his knowledge and success to the formative years spent under his guidance. “The experience shaped my architectural approach, emphasizing flexibility, sustainability, and functionality in design,” he reflects. He worked with Faquih for four years before establishing his own firm, Arche-Vista, in 1996.
His first independent commission was both a challenge and a revelation. “It was during that first project that I truly understood the importance of having a mentor. The experience was challenging, but immensely fulfilling. With the earnings from that project, I bought my first home in Thane,” Somani shares.
Among Somani’s many remarkable projects, Rayaba, a regal ethnic wear retail outlet in Jalna, stands out as an architectural masterpiece. Designed as a fusion of Mughal and Rajasthani influences, the space offers an immersive experience that embodies the grandeur of Indian heritage.
“Rayaba’s ethnic palatial studio is a tribute to the essence of marriage, where every design element tells a story,” says Somani. From intricately patterned Galicha flooring, which sets the stage for luxurious bridal wear displays, to customized lighting arrangements that highlight exquisite craftsmanship, every detail has been meticulously curated.
A standout feature of the studio is the acquisition of antique doors from a 200-year-old haveli in Jodhpur. “These intricately carved doors serve as a gateway to history, transporting visitors to an era of grandeur where timeless traditions merge with contemporary style,” Somani explains.
Somani’s architectural philosophy revolves around creating sustainable, adaptable, and client-centric designs. Whether working on a residential villa or a large-scale commercial space, his approach prioritizes integrating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions, and designing functional and cultural sensitive spaces.
With a career defined by creativity, technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Milind Somani continues to redefine architectural landscapes.
