In the tranquil neighborhood of Kolhapur, amidst the familiar urban landscape, stands a house that sparks curiosity at every corner. The House of Curiosities is a 15,000-square-foot residence that transforms living spaces into an immersive experience of art and design.
Designed for a multigenerational family with roots in Kankavli, this residence is more than just a home—it’s a carefully curated collection of experiences, art, and heritage woven seamlessly into its architecture.
The House of Curiosities is a sprawling three-story structure, designed to provide a seamless flow of spaces that evoke a sense of wonder and exploration. The house's layout and the interplay of scales and volumes make it much like wandering through an art museum.
Upon entering, the entrance foyer offers a glimpse into the expansive living area, a space that rises to a height of 30 feet. The space is accentuated by a cascading rug by the FAZO Project and Harshita Jhamtani’s 28-foot totemic clay lamp. These elements not only add grandeur but also serve as focal points that set the tone for the residence’s artistic expression. The home’s layout and the interplay of scales and volumes create an experience akin to wandering through an art museum.
A Play of Light, Color, and Texture
Throughout the residence, an interplay of materials and finishes enhances the storytelling aspect of the design. The water court, inspired by a playful Lego-like style, features intricate clay sea creatures that invite contemplation amid the home’s lively design.
A network of bridges and traditional jharokhas or traditional Indian balconies weave through the residence, ensuring visual connectivity while adding an element of discovery. These elements are veiled by a glass module whose pivoting sections cast transient reflections of blush, orange, and ruby tints on the pristine white walls. This dynamic interaction of light and colour creates an ever-changing visual landscape within the home.
Blending Functionality with Art
Functional elements within the home have been transformed into works of art. The staircase, adorned with teak balustrades and pressed flower panels by Rooshad Shroff, pays homage to the homeowners’ collection of pressed flowers, seamlessly blending function with beauty. These thoughtful details elevate everyday elements into captivating visual stories.
Beyond the public areas, the house also boasts private spaces designed to offer solace and comfort. The master bedroom, with its walk-in closet and a bathroom, exudes tranquility and comfort. The two sons’ bedrooms are designed with unique color palettes—one in shades of teal, aqua, and blue, and the other in terracotta, salmon, and plum—reflecting their distinct personalities.
On the second floor, the hidden treasures, such as a terrace hideout and a yellow-toned escape room, further enrich the home’s offerings, providing spaces for relaxation and leisure.
The House of Curiosities is not just a home; it is a celebration of collaboration. The designers worked with various artists and craftspeople to ensure every element of the house was infused with creative energy. This project stands as a testament to how art and design can merge seamlessly to create a space that is both visually captivating and deeply personal.
